Sun, Sea and Safety – Top Tips for Checking Tyres

After one of the coldest and toughest winters in recent years, we can finally see signs of summer. With the bank holiday just gone and motorhomers eager to get going, it is essential that you check the tyres on your vehicles before hitting the road.  

With many motorhome owners first trip of the season underway, advice from leading UK tyre safety experts TyreSafe comes at the perfect time.

“Spring time is an especially popular time for motor home owners to take to the roads but it’s important that before setting off, they make some critical checks,” says Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “Failing to do so could result in a number of tyre related problems which at best could see them stranded by the roadside, potentially spoiling a well-earned weekend away, or at worst cause more serious injury and damage.”

Over the winter months the cold and extreme weather can cause tyres and tyre pressure to deteriorate, so it is essential to check these areas before any journey.

• The first important area to check is tyre pressure, over the winter months the tyre pressure can significantly drop leaving the tyres dangerous and unstable.
• Check for cuts and slits that have been caused by change in pressure and change in weather conditions.
• Check brake pads and disks have not been affected by ice and cold conditions.

As well as checking tyre pressure you must also ensure you visually check your tyres, as the long winter months mean tyres can crack and become less stable and dangerous on the open roads.

Any loose stones and chippings should be removed from the tread area and tread depths of each tyre should also be checked to ensure they comply with the legal minimum requirements of 1.6mm and if they do not meet the requirements, tyres must be replaced.
